Song Analysis: "Dipper Mouth Blues" by King Oliver's Creole Band

For this week, I decided to analyze the song "Dipper Mouth Blues" by King Oliver. This piece has no words with it and is just a nice blues piece overall. When listening to this piece at first, I thought that there was one instrument very prominently playing as the lead but as I listened more, I realized that every instrument in the band is working in harmony together to create the piece. It is really a work of art when you listen to it, there are several instruments not just creating background music together for a solo lead, but an ensemble all intertwining their own melodies into one another to create this beautiful quilt, woven from the musical threads that each one supplies to the whole. As for the mood of the music itself, it is a bop, I can just imagine playing it subtly in the background as I continue with my daily routine. It is unobtrusively simple at first glance, but complexly gorgeous when inspected closer. When trying to isolate each instrument, it becomes abundantly clear that each musician knows exactly where they are moving in the piece to match one another. I can not remember if the professor said if this was improved, but it is simply impressive either way. It was truly a treat to listen to at 11pm on a Saturday evening.
